My Journey to Becoming a Member of The Magic Circle
What is The Magic Circle?
Becoming a member of The Magic Circle is a dream that many magicians around the world share. Founded in 1905, The Magic Circle is recognised as one of the most prestigious magical organisations in the world, with membership awarded to performers who can demonstrate a high level of skill, professionalism and dedication to the art of magic.
The Magic Circle is based at its historic headquarters in Euston, London. The building has become a home for magicians and magic enthusiasts from across the world, hosting regular meetings, lectures, performances and events. For over a century, it has played an important role in bringing together some of the most talented performers in the magical community.

My own journey to becoming a member of The Magic Circle began with an application process that was both exciting and challenging. Unlike many organisations, membership is not simply a case of applying and joining. The process is designed to ensure that new members demonstrate not only magical ability, but also a genuine passion and commitment to the art.
To apply for membership, you must have both a proposer and a seconder who are current members of The Magic Circle and who have known you for at least one year. I was incredibly fortunate and honoured to have my application supported by two very respected members of the magic community: the late former President of The Magic Circle, Jack Delvin, and Member of the Inner Magic Circle, Sarah Campbell.
After submitting my application, the next stage was an interview. This gave me the opportunity to talk about my background in magic, my experience as a performer and my passion for the art. The interview process also allowed the panel to understand more about my approach to magic and my commitment to continuing to develop as a performer.
After successfully completing the interview, I progressed to the final stage of the process: the performance examination.
The performance exam is where aspiring members have the opportunity to showcase their magic in front of a panel of judges. It is not simply about whether the tricks work. The performance is judged on many aspects, including technical ability, presentation, audience engagement, originality and the overall quality of the magical experience created.
Preparing for this exam was a significant moment in my magical journey, and I was incredibly grateful for the support I received from those around me. Sarah Campbell, who was also my seconder, provided invaluable advice and guidance throughout my preparation, helping me understand the standards expected and how to refine my performance.
I was also fortunate to have the support of Mark Hesketh Jennings, Sarah’s partner and the official photographer of The Magic Circle. Mark was a great source of encouragement during this time, offering his time, advice and support as I prepared for this important milestone. Sadly, Mark passed away at the end of 2025, but I remain extremely grateful for the kindness and help he gave me during such an important chapter of my magical journey.
For my performance examination, I wanted to showcase a variety of magical styles and techniques. My routine included fire, money magic, playing cards, a borrowed ring and string. I wanted the performance to demonstrate not only technical skill, but also my ability to create memorable moments and connect with an audience.
After completing the exam, the waiting began. The following four weeks felt like a long time as I waited to find out whether I had been successful. Eventually, I received the news I had been hoping for. I had passed and was officially welcomed as a member of The Magic Circle in 2016.
My work within The Magic Circle
Since becoming a member, my journey with The Magic Circle has continued to be incredibly rewarding. I have had the privilege of serving for a period on The Magic Circle Council, where I was able to contribute to the organisation and support its work behind the scenes.
During the COVID-19 restrictions, when live performances and events were heavily affected, I also had the opportunity to run The Magic Circle TV (TMC TV). This project helped keep members connected and brought magical content to audiences during a time when performers were unable to gather and perform in the usual way.
In 2021, I was incredibly proud to be promoted to Associate of the Inner Magic Circle (A.I.M.C). This honour is something I am extremely proud to have received and represents recognition of my continued involvement with The Magic Circle and my dedication to the art of magic.
Being a member of The Magic Circle has also given me the opportunity to spend time at its iconic headquarters in Euston, London, surrounded by some of the most talented magicians in the world. The venue holds a special place in magical history and continues to be a place where performers can share ideas, learn from each other and celebrate the craft.
Looking back, becoming a member of The Magic Circle remains one of the proudest achievements of my magical career. It represents years of practice, dedication and the support of many people who have helped me along the way.
Magic has always been about creating moments of wonder and bringing people together. Being part of The Magic Circle has allowed me to meet some of the most talented magicians in the world, learn from others and continue developing my own craft.
It is a privilege to be part of such a historic organisation, and I look forward to continuing my journey as a member of The Magic Circle for many years to come.
