Magician Croydon

Close-up magic for weddings, work events and parties across Croydon, from a magician based just up the road.

About Magician Croydon

Croydon is the one town in my area where the corporate and the domestic sit side by side. There’s a genuine business district around East Croydon with office parties and client events in it, and then a few minutes away there’s Purley and South Croydon doing weddings and family celebrations in hotels and at home. They want quite different things from an entertainer.

I’m based in Orpington, which is a straightforward run across, and there’s no travel surcharge for Croydon.

Venues in Croydon

I’ve worked in Croydon plenty of times. What I won’t do is dress it up as a town of landmark venues, because it isn’t one. The bookings here happen in office space near East Croydon, hotel function rooms further south towards Purley, and private homes. Good rooms, well run, but not places anyone outside Croydon has heard of.

That matters far less than you’d think. Close-up magic doesn’t depend on the room, because it happens in your guests’ hands rather than on a stage. A function room works exactly as well as a ballroom, and the ceiling height, the acoustics and the sightlines are all somebody else’s problem.

Tell me where yours is and I’ll be straight with you about whether I know it.

The kind of events Croydon actually produces

The office work here is different from the City. Croydon’s corporate bookings tend to be team events, summer socials and Christmas parties rather than black-tie client entertaining, and the tone follows: less formal, more genuinely social, and often on a weekday evening straight after work rather than a Saturday.

That last point matters more than it sounds. A Thursday-after-work party has a hard start, because people wander in from their desks over about forty minutes, and it has a soft finish, because people leave for trains. The middle is the strong bit, and that’s where entertainment earns its money.

The wedding and celebration work is concentrated south of the town centre. Purley and South Croydon have the hotels; the town centre mostly doesn’t.

Getting there, parking and access

East Croydon is one of the better-connected stations in the south, which cuts both ways. It means your guests can get there easily. It also means the town centre is genuinely busy and parking is multi-storey rather than something you chance on the street.

For office bookings, the relevant question is usually the building rather than the roads: whether there’s a security desk, whether I need to be signed in, and whether anyone has told reception I’m coming. I’ll ask about that in advance rather than discovering it at 6pm with a lobby full of your colleagues watching.

Which part of the day usually needs filling

For a Croydon office party, it’s the arrivals window. People trickle in from work over half an hour or more, and the room feels flat until enough of them are there. Magic works well in that stretch because it doesn’t need an audience to have assembled first. I can work a group of four as easily as a group of forty.

For a wedding out towards Purley, it’s the usual answer: the drinks reception, while you’re having photographs taken.

For a birthday at home, it’s whenever the food is happening.

What it costs

My bookings run from £450 to £1,200:

Performance timePrice
45 minutes to 1 hour£450 – £600
2 hours£500 – £900
4 hours£800 – £1,200

The bands overlap on purpose. Duration sets the floor, it doesn’t set the price. The date does a lot of the work: Saturdays from May to September and all of December are the busiest, and a weekday evening in February is a very different proposition.

Worth knowing for Croydon office parties specifically: a weekday evening booking is usually at the friendlier end of its band, because it isn’t competing with a peak Saturday.

No travel surcharge for Croydon, or anywhere else in London, Kent, Surrey or Berkshire.

What’s included

Every booking includes:

  • Close-up magic performed among your guests rather than from a stage
  • Full public liability insurance, which most venues require evidence of before they’ll let a supplier work
  • PAT-tested equipment and written risk assessments where your venue asks for them
  • A planning conversation beforehand, so I know the shape of your event
  • Flexibility across whichever part of the day actually needs filling

What doesn’t cost extra

Travel within my core area. Arriving early to set up. Staying on when things overrun by fifteen minutes. A phone call beforehand to talk it through. None of it appears on an invoice.

If a quote you’ve had elsewhere excludes insurance or travel, you aren’t comparing like with like.

Common questions about Croydon bookings

Is there a travel charge to book you in Croydon? No. Croydon is well inside my core area.

Can you perform at an office during the working day? Yes. Client lunches, team events and daytime celebrations all work. East Croydon is a straightforward journey from Orpington, so an early start isn’t a problem.

Our office party is on a weekday evening. Is that harder to book? Easier, usually, and often cheaper. Weekday evenings outside December are the most available dates in my calendar.

We’re expecting around 200 people. Is one magician enough? Past roughly 150 guests it’s worth a conversation about either a longer booking or a second performer. I’d rather tell you that upfront than have you pay for something that can’t reach half the room.

Booking

Send me your date, venue and rough guest numbers and I’ll come back with a firm price rather than an estimate. No obligation and no follow-up sequence.
