London Events: A Closer Look

A few real bookings, to give a sense of how close-up magic actually fits into different kinds of London event. Every one was booked by the company, couple or host running the event rather than by the venue itself.

Corporate Hospitality at City Central, HAC

The Honourable Artillery Company’s City Central sits in one of the more unusual spots in the City of London, a Georgian headquarters with five acres of ground behind it, and it hosts a steady run of corporate dinners and client evenings through December.

Close-up magic works particularly well at this kind of event because of when it happens. The drinks reception before a corporate dinner is the part of the evening most likely to fall flat: guests arrive in ones and twos, colleagues cluster with colleagues, and clients stand slightly apart wondering who to talk to. Working the room during that window does the introductions nobody wants to make themselves. By the time people sit down, the noise level in the room is completely different.

Nothing about the format asks anything of the venue. No stage, no sound system, no power and no load-in, which for a City venue running back-to-back events in December is the difference between an easy supplier and an awkward one.

Exhibition Floor at ExCeL London

ExCeL is a different proposition to a dinner or a wedding. It is vast, noisy, and everyone walking past a stand has already decided not to stop. A well-designed stand is not, on its own, enough to change that.

Close-up magic solves a specific problem on an exhibition floor: it stops people. Magic performed at arm’s length gives someone a reason to pause, and once they have paused they are a person to talk to rather than a name badge going past. The performance draws the crowd and warms it up, and the stand team then has an audience that actually wants to be there.

It also scales down neatly. Between the busy periods the same magic works one-to-one for a single visitor at the stand, so there is no dead time.

A Thames Boat Party from Temple Pier

A boat on the Thames is one of the more demanding rooms a close-up magician can work, and one of the best. The space is tight, the floor is moving, guests are spread between the deck and the cabin, and London is sliding past the windows competing for everyone’s attention.

That last part is why close-up magic suits a boat party better than most entertainment. There is no stage to gather everyone around and no realistic way to hold a whole boat’s attention at once. Magic that happens in someone’s hands, for the group standing right there, works with how people actually behave on a boat: they move around, they drift between deck and bar, and the entertainment goes to them rather than asking them to come to it.

Practically, a boat is also a venue with no room for equipment, which is exactly the kind of booking where carrying nothing is an advantage.

A Milestone Birthday aboard HMS Belfast

HMS Belfast is moored in the Pool of London between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, and hosting a party aboard a Second World War cruiser is not a decision anyone makes by accident. This one was a 70th birthday.

Milestone birthdays bring a particular mix: family who have known each other for decades, friends from different parts of someone’s life, and a spread of ages from grandchildren to contemporaries. That mix is harder to entertain than a corporate room, because anything pitched at one group tends to lose another.

Close-up magic sidesteps that by never addressing the whole room at once. It goes group to group and adjusts each time, so the teenagers get something different in tone to the guest of honour’s oldest friends, without it ever becoming a children’s show or going over anyone’s head.

What Affects the Cost of Hiring a Magician in London

My London bookings run from £450 to £1,200:

Those bands overlap deliberately. How long you book me for sets the floor, it does not set the price. Four things move it from there:

• How long you need. A 45-minute drinks reception slot is a different booking to a full afternoon and evening.
• Guest numbers. Past roughly 150 guests, one magician cannot reach every group in a sensible window, so it is worth discussing a longer booking or a second performer.
• The date. Saturdays from May to September and most of December book up first and are the hardest to get.
• Format. Walk-around during drinks, table-to-table at a meal, or a combination across the same event.

The Practical Side

Nothing needs setting up, plugging in or loading in. Everything Pete needs fits in a jacket pocket, which means no van, no parking to arrange and nothing for a venue coordinator or AV supplier to schedule around.
