About Private Party Magician for Unforgettable Celebrations
The best parties are the ones where everyone feels included, conversations flow naturally and guests leave with stories to tell.
Whether you’re celebrating a milestone birthday, anniversary, Christmas party, garden party or simply bringing friends and family together, Pete James delivers interactive close-up magic that gets people laughing, talking and sharing unforgettable moments. Performed right in your guests’ hands, the magic creates an atmosphere that’s fun, relaxed and completely unique to your celebration.
Based in Orpington and entertaining at private parties across London, Kent, Surrey and the UK, Pete adapts every performance to suit your guests and the style of your event. Whether you’re hosting an intimate gathering at home or a large celebration at a venue, the entertainment is tailored to the room, ensuring everyone feels part of the experience.
From children seeing their first impossible moment to grandparents trying to work out how it happened, close-up magic brings generations together in a way that very few forms of entertainment can.
No stage. No loudspeakers. Just unforgettable moments, shared laughter and amazing magic that your guests will be talking about long after the party has ended.
Parties Pete Has Performed At
A few real ones, to give you a sense of the range:
- A surprise 80th birthday at Common Room in Eynsford
- A Golden Wedding Anniversary in the Billiard Room at The Beacon Hotel, Tunbridge Wells
- A wedding celebration at Coltsford Mill, a converted watermill near Oxted
- Private dining at The Ivy in Soho and Madhu’s at The Grove in Southall
- Thames boat parties setting off from Temple, Westminster and Tower piers
- Garden parties in Keston Park and Farnborough Park
At Home or at a Venue
Both work equally well, and neither needs anything from you. There’s no stage, no sound system, no power and nothing to load in – everything Pete needs fits in his pockets. That makes a front room or a garden just as workable as a function room, and means a venue coordinator has nothing extra to schedule around.
Garden parties are fine weather permitting, though Pete always has a backup in mind in case it turns. For a party where guests are seated for a meal, he moves table to table between courses so each group gets its own performance rather than watching from a distance.
What Affects the Cost
No single price fits every party. What moves it:
- How long you need. An hour of mingling during drinks is a different booking to a full evening.
- Guest numbers. Twenty guests and a hundred and twenty guests need different amounts of time to reach properly.
- The date. Saturdays in summer and most of December go first.
- Travel. No surcharge anywhere in London, Kent or Surrey.
Tell Pete your date, rough guest numbers and where it is, and he will come back with an actual figure.

Frequently Asked Questions
I am based in Orpington, Greater London, UK, but regularly perform at high-profile events nationwide and internationally - including regularly across Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Essex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
Most bookings run one to two hours of mixed-and-mingled close-up magic, though I offer flexible packages from a short 45-minute slot up to a full day's entertainment - whatever suits your event.
The Magic Circle is Britain's most respected society for magicians, founded in 1905. It isn't a membership you can simply pay for - every applicant has to pass a formal examination (or submit a thesis) in front of a panel of existing members, demonstrating real skill and knowledge of the craft, before being admitted. I've been a Member since 2016.
All of them - the material adapts to the room, so the same performance works for a milestone birthday with grandparents and grandchildren in the same space, right through to an adults-only get-together.
Yes, weather permitting - close-up magic works just as well outside as in, though I'll always have a backup plan in mind in case the weather turns.
Not really - I've performed for intimate gatherings of a dozen people and parties of well over a hundred. Let me know your guest count when you enquire and I'll advise on timing.
