Magician Tunbridge Wells

Close-up magic for weddings, corporate events and private celebrations in and around Royal Tunbridge Wells.

About Magician Tunbridge Wells

One of my favourite bookings anywhere was a Golden Wedding Anniversary in the Billiard Room at The Beacon Hotel, tucked away in its own grounds off Tea Garden Lane. Fifty years married, a room full of people who mostly knew each other, and an afternoon with no schedule to fight against.

I mention it first because it’s the most Tunbridge Wells booking I’ve had, and because anniversaries are what this town produces more of than anywhere else I work.

There’s no travel charge to Tunbridge Wells.

Venues in Tunbridge Wells

The Beacon Hotel is the one I know properly, including the Billiard Room, which is a genuinely good space for close-up work. It’s small enough that everyone can see, and separate enough from the rest of the hotel that the room belongs to your event.

The town’s wider draw is its Georgian hotels and function rooms, which suit this kind of entertainment well. Rooms of that period tend to be proportioned for conversation rather than for a stage, which is exactly the right shape for magic that happens in people’s hands.

The kind of events Tunbridge Wells actually produces

Milestone anniversaries are the category that stands out here. Silver, ruby, golden. They’re a distinctly different event from a birthday, and they need a different approach.

The room is usually multi-generational, with grandchildren at one end and the couple’s own contemporaries at the other. There’s often a speech. And the guests of honour are frequently in their seventies or eighties, which affects how you work a room: you go to them rather than expecting them to come to you, and you don’t build anything around people standing up.

Beyond that, the town does weddings at hotels rather than country estates, and a steady amount of corporate dining, which tends to be a company treating people rather than entertaining clients.

Getting there, parking and access

Tunbridge Wells is the furthest of my regular Kent towns from Orpington, and the run down is straightforward outside peak times. It’s within my core area and carries no surcharge.

The town itself is hilly and the older streets are narrow, which matters mostly if your venue is central and your guests are driving. Hotels in their own grounds, The Beacon among them, sidestep that entirely.

Which part of the day usually needs filling

At an anniversary, the answer is unusual and worth saying plainly: it’s after the speeches, not before.

Anniversary parties tend to build to a toast, and there’s a flat patch afterwards where the formal part is finished but nobody’s ready to leave. That’s when the room needs something, and it’s almost never what people book. Most enquiries ask for the arrivals drinks, which is fine, but it isn’t where the gap actually is.

At a Tunbridge Wells wedding it’s the usual drinks reception answer. At a corporate dinner it’s between courses, working table to table.

What it costs

My bookings run from £450 to £1,200:

Performance timePrice
45 minutes to 1 hour£450 – £600
2 hours£500 – £900
4 hours£800 – £1,200

The bands overlap deliberately. Duration sets the floor, it doesn’t set the price. Saturdays from May to September and the whole of December are the busiest dates in the calendar and price accordingly.

Anniversaries have an advantage here that’s worth knowing. They’re far less locked to a peak Saturday than weddings are, because the date that matters is the actual anniversary. If yours falls midweek, or you’re marking it a fortnight either side, you’ll find both my availability and the figure noticeably friendlier.

No travel surcharge for Tunbridge Wells, or anywhere else in Kent, London, Surrey or Berkshire.

What’s included

Every booking includes:

  • Close-up magic performed among your guests rather than from a stage
  • Full public liability insurance, which most venues require evidence of before they’ll let a supplier work
  • PAT-tested equipment and written risk assessments where your venue asks for them
  • A planning conversation beforehand, so I know the shape of your event
  • Flexibility across whichever part of the day actually needs filling

What doesn’t cost extra

Travel within my core area. Arriving early to set up. Staying on when things overrun by fifteen minutes. A phone call beforehand to talk it through. None of it appears on an invoice.

If a quote you’ve had elsewhere excludes insurance or travel, you aren’t comparing like with like.

Common questions about Tunbridge Wells bookings

Is there a travel charge to book you in Tunbridge Wells? No. It’s inside my core area.

Do you know The Beacon Hotel? Yes, including the Billiard Room. I performed at a Golden Wedding Anniversary there.

Our anniversary party has guests in their eighties. Does that work? It works well, and it’s a good part of what I do. Close-up magic goes to people where they’re sitting, so nobody has to stand, crowd round, or be picked out in front of a room. Nothing depends on volunteers.

Our date is midweek. Is that a problem? The opposite. Midweek dates outside December are the most available in my calendar and usually the best value.

Booking

Send me your date, venue and rough guest numbers and I’ll come back with a firm price rather than an estimate. No obligation and no follow-up sequence.
