Close-up magic for weddings, corporate events and private parties in Swanley, just down the road from Pete's Orpington base.
Swanley is about as close to Orpington as anywhere I cover, a few miles down the A20, closer in practice than parts of Bromley itself. It’s a small town without the sprawl of somewhere like Dartford or Maidstone, and the bookings reflect that. Mostly private parties, pub function rooms and family occasions, rather than the corporate calendar a bigger town brings in.
I’ve performed at both of Swanley’s regular venues: a work Christmas party at The Clockhouse Pavilion, and a 40th birthday at The Cotton Mill Micropub. What I can say honestly is that Swanley’s small enough that most of what I do there is function rooms and private addresses beyond those two, and I’d rather tell you that plainly than pad the list.
Given the size of the town, Swanley bookings skew toward birthdays, anniversaries and small private celebrations rather than large corporate work or country house weddings. Pub function rooms come up often, which suits close-up magic well, since there’s rarely a stage and the crowd’s already standing around mixing before I arrive.
This is one of the shortest drives I do, down the A20 and through Farningham or St Mary Cray depending on traffic. Being this close means I can usually offer more flexibility on timing than I could further out, and there’s rarely a reason to build in much of a buffer.
Parking in Swanley itself is generally straightforward, more like a small town high street than anywhere that needs multi-storey parking. Pub car parks and residential streets cover most of what I’ve come across.
At a small private party the gap is usually early on, before everyone’s arrived and while the first few guests are stood around with a drink, not quite sure what to do with themselves yet. That’s the moment close-up magic earns its keep at a gathering this size. It gives people something to do together before the night’s properly started.
My bookings run from £450 to £1,200:
| Performance time | Price |
|---|---|
| 45 minutes to 1 hour | £450 – £600 |
| 2 hours | £500 – £900 |
| 4 hours | £800 – £1,200 |
Those bands overlap deliberately. How long you book me for sets the floor, it doesn’t set the price. The date matters more than most people expect, and Saturdays from May to September and the whole of December are the busiest in the calendar.
Swanley carries no travel surcharge. Neither does anywhere else in London, Kent, Surrey or Berkshire.

I am based in Orpington, Greater London, UK, but regularly perform at high-profile events nationwide and internationally - including regularly across Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Essex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
Most bookings run one to two hours of mixed-and-mingled close-up magic, though I offer flexible packages from a short 45-minute slot up to a full day's entertainment - whatever suits your event.
The Magic Circle is Britain's most respected society for magicians, founded in 1905. It isn't a membership you can simply pay for - every applicant has to pass a formal examination (or submit a thesis) in front of a panel of existing members, demonstrating real skill and knowledge of the craft, before being admitted. I've been a Member since 2016.
No - Swanley is one of the closest towns to my Orpington base, so there's no travel fee.
All of them - I've performed at pub function rooms, work Christmas parties and private celebrations across Swanley.
Yes - pub function rooms are one of the most common settings for this. I have worked The Clockhouse Pavilion and The Cotton Mill Micropub locally. No stage or equipment is needed, so almost any room works.
Also based near or regularly booked in these areas - get in touch even if your event isn't listed here.
